Jefferson Lap Desk Reproduction – Curly Maple & Mahogany Inlay
In 1776, Thomas Jefferson commissioned Philadelphia cabinetmaker Benjamin Randolph to craft a compact lap desk—a portable writing station that would travel with him through one of the most pivotal moments in American history. From this modest mahogany box, Jefferson is believed to have drafted the Declaration of Independence, lending the original piece its iconic status. Today, the original lap desk is on display at Monticello, Jefferson’s estate in Virginia. This finely crafted reproduction reimagines that historic design with elegant updates. Made from beautifully figured curly maple and accented with rich mahogany inlay, it blends classic form with artistic flair. The desk features a distinctive open-ended design with a locking slide-out drawer for storing pens, paper, and supplies. Hinged panels on top can be positioned to support a book or unfolded to create a generous writing surface. Finished with traditional shellac and hand-rubbed wax, the desk showcases the warmth and character of hand-finished woodwork. A matching mahogany display stand is available separately for showcasing this remarkable piece.Whether as a centerpiece for your study or a meaningful gift, this reproduction is more than furniture—it’s a tribute to history and craftsmanship.
